My favorite part of being a manager isn't shipping features. Its telling someone on my team they're getting a raise they didn't ask for.

The conversation that follows is pure gold. We barely talk about the money.

Instead, we talk about what it unlocks:

• How they see their own value.
• What this really means for them.
• What they're secretly dreaming about for their career.
• What it means for their family.

The salary is the topic. The person is the point.
