Retaining Engineers Through Team Dynamics
Retaining engineers isn't about the tech stack
I used to think a modern tech stack and a big vision was what retained engineers. I was wrong.
What keeps people on a project long-term is the team.
The people in the trenches with them.
- A cool project with a bad team -> people will leave.
- A tough project with a great team -> people will stay.
The difference is daily interactions, trust, and psychological safety.
As a manager, your main job is protecting the team dynamic. Everything else is secondary for this matter.
